- Testing The Nature Of Rust-- Test tube, Red and blue litmus paper, Watch glass
Collect a spoonful of rust and dissolve it in a very little amount of water. You will find that the rust remains suspended in water. Shake the suspension well. Test the solution with red and blue litmus papers.
11. Do Liquids Conduct Electricity—Beaker, Cell holder, cells, LED, Wires, Tap water
Construct a circuit using two cells, an LED and connecting wires. Immerse the two free ends of the wires into a beaker containing water (Tap water) or any liquid without touching each other. If the LED glows, the liquid conducts electricity. If the LED does not glow, the liquid does not conduct electricity. If the brightness of the LED glow is high, then those liquids are good conductors. If the brightness of the LED is low, it indicates that less current is going through those liquids and they are poor conductors of electricity. If the LED does not glow, it denotes that such liquids are insulators.
12. Testing Conduction Of Electricity In Lemon Juice -- Beaker, Cell holder, cells, LED, Wires, Lemon juice.
13. Fermentation—Test tubes, Sugar, Yeast, 2 Balloons, Lime water
Take two test tubes and mark them A and B. keep these tubes in a test tube stand and fill them with water leaving some space at the top. Put two spoonfuls of sugar in each of the test tubes. Add a spoonful of yeast in test tube B. Inflate the two balloons incompletely. Now tie the balloons on the mouths of each test tube. Keep them in a warm place, away from sunlight. Watch the setup every day for next 3-4 days. Record your observations and think of an explanation. Now take another test tube filled 1/4 with lime water. Remove the balloon from test tube B in such a manner that gas inside the balloon does not escape. Fit the balloon on the test tube and shake well.
Observe and explain.
14. Burning of magnesium—Magnesium ribbon, Watch glass, Spirit lamp
Magnesium burns to form magnesium oxide and produces heat and light
15. Spring Balance
Tie a string around a brick. Pull the brick by a spring balance. You need to apply some force. Note down the reading on the spring balance when the brick just begins to move. It gives you a measure of the force of friction between the surface of the brick and the floor.
16. Chemical Reactions-Displacement reaction: Zinc metal, Dilute sulphuric acid, Test tubes
Zinc reacts with dil. sulphuric acid. Hydrogen gas is evolved, with an effervescence
17. Chemical Reactions: Copper sulphate solution, Iron filings, Test tube
When a few pieces of iron are dropped into a blue coloured copper sulphate solution, the blue colour of the solution fades and eventually turns green.
18. Chemical Reactions- Decomposition reaction: Ferrous sulphate, Sodium Hydroxide, Test tubes
When ferrous sulphate solution is added to sodium hydroxide solution, a dirty green ppt. of ferrous hydroxide is formed.
19.Chemical Reactions: dilute sulphuric acid, Barium chloride, Test tube
When few drops of dilute sulphuric acid is added to barium chloride solution, a white precipitate of barium sulphate is formed.
20.Chemical Reactions: Neutralization: Sodium Hydroxide solution, Dilute Hydrochloric acid,Test tubes
A chemical reaction in which a base or an alkali reacts, with an acid to produce a salt and water only.
21. Chemical Reactions: Double decomposition reaction: Silver nitrate solution, Hydrochloric acid
Test tube
A chemical reaction in which two compounds in their aqueous state exchange their ions to form new compounds is called a double decomposition reaction.
