Recognition and identification of certain gases listed below. Gases: (10 Experiments) Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon dioxide, Chlorine, Hydrogen chloride, Sulphur dioxide, Hydrogen sulphide, Ammonia, Water vapour, Nitrogen dioxide.

Experiments List as Follows:-
  1. Action of heat on the following compounds: (a) copper carbonate, zinc carbonate (b) washing soda, copper sulphate crystals (c) zinc nitrate, copper nitrate, lead nitrate (d) ammonium chloride, iodine, ammonium dichromate. Make observations, identify the products and make deductions where possible.
  2. Action of dilute sulphuric acid on the following substances. (a) a metal (b) a carbonate (c) a sulphide (d) a sulphite. Make observations, identify the gas evolved and make deductions.
  3. Apply the flame test to identify the metal in the unknown substance. (a) a sodium salt (b) a potassium salt (c) a calcium compound.
  4. Simple experiments based on hard water and soft water – identification of hardness – simple softening – by heating the temporary hard water, using washing soda and advantage of using detergents over soap in hard water.

5) Preparation of:

  1. a) A true solution of common salt, sugar and alum
  2. b) A suspension of soil, chalk powder and fine sand in water
  3. c) A colloidal solution of starch in water and egg albumin/milk in water and distinguish between these on the basis of transparency filtration criterion stability

6) Preparation of:

  1. a) A mixture
  2. b) A compound

Using iron filings and sulphur powder and distinguishing between these on the basis of: (i) Appearance, i.e., homogeneity and heterogeneity (ii) Behaviour towards a magnet (iii) Behaviour towards carbon disulphide as a solvent (iv) Effect of heat 7) Separation of the components of a mixture of sand, common salt and ammonium chloride (or camphor). 8) Perform the following reactions and classify them as physical or chemical changes:

  1. a) Iron with copper sulphate solution in water
  2. b) Burning of magnesium ribbon in air
  3. c) Zinc with dilute sulphuric acid
  4. d) Heating of copper sulphate crystals
  5. e) Sodium sulphate with barium chloride in the form of their solutions in water

9.To study the changes in state of sublimate solids on heating. Ammonium chloride (or camphor or naphthalene or iodine or any other sublimable solid), china dish, funnel, cotton plug, burner, tripod stand, and a wire gauge,.

10.To separate the components of a mixture of sand, common salt and ammonium chloride.  A china dish, a funnel, a beaker (250 mL), a cotton plug, burner, tripod stand, wire gauge, sand, common salt, ammonium chloride, water, and filter paper

11.To prepare solutions of various substances and to identify them as true solutions and suspensions. Powder samples of sodium chloride (or common salt), sugar, baking soda, chalk powder, sand, and sulphur etc., a beaker (250 mL), water, and a glass stirrer rod.

12.To study the process of separation of a mixture of two immiscible liquids  Separating funnel (250 mL)(with its stop-cock), two beakers (250 mL), and two immiscible liquids such as water and kerosene.
